Ten-year-old Jonathan Rhodes and his constant companion, Colleen, lived in the days of tall ships, pirates and political upheaval between the Americans and the British. Through no fault of their own, the two were cruelly separated. Brokenhearted, Jonathan promised to find her after they were grown and twelve years later, he thought he had – but she did not remember him.

Next book in this series – Broken Pledge.

All 7 positive reviews of this book got me really excited. Unfortunately, i do not like this book at all and i do not understand the ratings so far. It took me more than a week to finish it, and almost skipped a good portion to jump to the ending. I think this is the first book i've read by this author, and this experience does not encourage me to read more of her work, even if i have one or two more in my kindle.

It could have benefited from better editing before publication. As i encountered one fault after another they became irritating. Here are some examples:
chapter 4: - “We will buy pots in American."
chapter 7: - "Retched King." (instead of wretched)
- "He was casually leaning against the door jam watching her." (Obviously it's jamb; I looked "door jam" up and Urban Dictionary.com gave a totally different definition that the author could not possibly mean.
- "Caroline accepted the arm of a Boston gentlemen ..."
- "What can it possible be?”
- "You saw the scare on his face ..." (scare is used more than once to mean scar. A scar can be scary and chapter 7 is scary in itself with all these editing issues)
Chapter 9:
- ... and Hester Wyley (what's it to be, Wyley or Wade?)
- even the mule's name changes from Tillie to Tilley
- "The souls of his shoe and legging were gone." (I tried so hard to fantasise, but i just can't imagine a shoe with a soul).
Also, a phrase or a statement often ends with a question mark instead of a period which were quite annoying.

The author could go on and on about certain irrelevant topics such as the giant statue, but she failed to elaborate on others which leaves me wondering still, like:
- The relationship between the Stuarts (Mary's/Colleen's family) and the Rodes (Jonathan's/Uriah's). Why did Mary's father move in with the Rodes?
- What was Uriah's business in London or his duties/connection to the King or the Earl of Bute? It was never clear to me.
- Did Levi Moore board a ship to escape England or is it indeed simply to find Uriah to give him a scarf back?
- what was Mary's sickness? There were hints about her being weak, and suddenly at their ball, they were talking about "it's time" and they brought her to bed to die.

The writing style is not to my liking. There is no proper story development. Things just happen in a flash, like when Uriah finally made himself known to Mary and suddenly they agreed to marry, or when John engaged himself to Hester, or that Mary was going to die. Just mentioning weakness every now and then didn't prepare me to expect death by the next paragraph. I also did not quite understand why Uriah and his son had to leave Mahala of a sudden. Were they out merely for an excursion or were they leaving for good? The story constantly jumps from plot to plot, often leaving a reader wondering about missing clues.

The part about the war was too long too much, and i didn't care for that especially as what really mattered to me were cliffhanging. I also couldn't connect to any of the characters. If this book is to be a romance, i didn't feel that. There was no chemistry at all; in fact, it feels somewhat robotic. They married because they had a childhood connection, he keeps leaving for London, they had a child, and so on, but i didn't feel any spark. I also did not find it funny that Mary smeared raspberries on her employer's chair to smudge her gown while entertaining visitors, or when she and Uriah dumped all of Lady Phillip's clothing in the pond. Why would someone do that to an old lady they were leaving all alone with no other servants to attend to her no matter how unpleasant she was? That is not a joke, it's simply demeaning and by doing it she lowers herself to the kind of attitude she despises. How awful!

The ending told about how this book is the story of the author's family. Fine, could be interesting, just not to me.

Loved this book! It had everything a lot of history a bit of romance and an all around great story line! Buy this book it's worth the money!!!
loved it. I read this one and the second book over the weekend. Was over too soon.
Loved the book. But it is a first of a series, and I wasn't inclined to read all at this time. But It was a history lesson. Well written.
I wasn't really into historians but once I started reading Marti Talbott books. I've read the Marblestone Manson, the Highlander series and the Carson series. I was really surprised how much I've enjoyed them and look forward to next one!
